Day 1
Our Freedom Fighters journey through the nation's capital begins as we arrive in Washington, D.C. to pick up our expert tour guide, setting the stage for a day dedicated to the men, women, and ideals that fought to secure American liberty. Our powerful first stop brings us to Cedar Hill, the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. Perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the U.S. Capitol, this historic estate was the final home of the famous orator, abolitionist, and champion of human rights. Here, we explore the grounds where Douglass voiced his unrelenting demand for equality, and we sit down for a screening of the orientation film, Fighter For Freedom, a 17-minute look into his journey from enslaved laborer to one of the most influential freedom fighters in American history.
Following this inspiring morning, we depart for Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, where you will have time for lunch on your own among a vast selection of dining choices within the shopping mall.
Reenergized after lunch, our afternoon continues with a circuit of the city's landmark tributes to those who stood up to defend liberty on both global and domestic fronts. We stop first at the National World War I Memorial to honor the brave souls who fought in the Great War, followed by the majestic Lincoln Memorial, dedicated to the leader who preserved the Union during its greatest crisis. At Lincoln's feet, we descend into a highlight of the tour: the newly opened Lincoln Undercroft. This subterranean museum space, set among the cavernous concrete pillars beneath the monument, offers a powerful look into the construction of the memorial and how its steps became the backdrop for generation after generation of civil rights freedom fighters; from Marian Anderson to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Next, we make our way to the National World War II Memorial, reflecting on the millions of Americans who united to defeat tyranny worldwide.
To end our day, we bid farewell to our guide and head to The Wharf, Washington D.C.'s vibrant waterfront district along the Potomac. You will have time to stroll the bustling riverwalk and enjoy dinner on your own at one of the many premier restaurants along the water, concluding our Freedom Fighters day trip with great food, scenic views, and unforgettable history.
