DAY 1
Following meal/rest stops enroute, enjoy the historic side of New York with its scenic landscape and glorious seacoast as you arrive at Vanderbilt's "Eagle's Nest," a 24-room mansion that offers an intimate look at the life of the privileged Vanderbilt family from the Jazz Age through the 2nd World War. Tour through the rooms filled with priceless art, furnishing and personal possessions. After your visit, you will depart and travel to your host hotel in Riverhead, New York, Hyatt Place Long Island/East End (631-208-0002), to check in for the next three nights. The hotel, located on the Peconic River and features indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, lobby bar and business center with complimentary internet access. DDAY 2
Wake up to a deluxe continental breakfast included at the hotel before you depart with your local guide for a fabulous, narrated tour of the neighborhoods and villages on Long Island's South Fork including "The Hamptons" - the summer playground of the rich and famous. It's marked by long stretches of beach and an interior of farmland, towns and villages with 18th century shingle buildings and estates hidden behind tall boxwood hedges. Notable residents include Jerry Seinfeld, Madonna, Calvin Klein, Kelly Ripa and Paul McCartney to name a few. You will also have a photo stop at Coopers Beach which is on the list of top 10 beaches in the United States. Lunch will be on your own in Montauk. Mid-afternoon, you will visit Montauk Lighthouse which was commissioned by George Washington in 1792. It is the first lighthouse in New York State and the 4th oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Take the opportunity to scale the 137 steps to the top of the tower for those who are able, explore the exhibits in the "keepers house" museum, shop in the gift shop and soak in the spectacular views. Dinner is included at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel for the remainder of the night.
CB, DDAY 3
Once again, a deluxe continental breakfast is included at the hotel before you board the motorcoach and travel with your local guide to Sag Harbor for a narrated driving tour. During the 19th century, Sag Harbor became one of the busiest ports in the northeast and it is where diverse cultures came together in pursuit of the mighty whale. You will have time for lunch on your own while in Sag Harbor. Early afternoon, you travel to the North Fork of Long Island via Shelter Island, a tiny island nestled between the north and south forks linked by two included ferry rides. Once back on land, you continue your driving tour of the North Fork enjoying its rural scenery through the agricultural region where vineyards and farm stands are plentiful. Next, stop at a local winery where you have a wine tasting in the Long Island wine region where the complexity of the farming soil contributes significantly to the quality and character of the grapes, and the wines. Dinner is included tonight before your return to the hotel to relax and unwind for the night.
CB, DDAY 4
Rise and shine to a deluxe continental breakfast included at the hotel before you check out and begin your travels back home, but not without one last stop at Old Westbury Gardens & Phipps Estate. This 200-acre estate's formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, and lakes are un-paralleled!! The former home of John S. Phipps, a lawyer, businessman and heir to the Phipps family fortune, and his family, was completed in 1906. Take a guided walking tour of the Charles II-style mansion and the formal gardens. Afterwards, you depart for home with appropriate meal/rest stops at your expense along the way.
