Day 1
Following a short stop enroute to Somerset, you will arrive for a self-guided visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial including both the Memorial Plaza with the Wall of Names of the Heroes of Flight 93, as well as the Visitor Center, dedicated on September 10, 2015. The visitor center was designed to give visitors a dramatic entrance with a long, black stone walkway marking the flight path of Flight 93. When the walkway ends, you find yourself at an overlook that gives an elevated view of the crash site where Flight 93 slammed into the ground at 560 miles per hour. Inside the center, there are 5 walls that tell the story of 9/11, starting with the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and finally the story of Flight 93. There are photographs, videos, and audio recordings of passengers last phone calls to loved ones. You can also stop at "The Tower of Voices" dedicated in September 2018. The 93-foot-tall tower housing 40 windchimes provides harmonious sounds and is a reminder of the 40 heroes who came together and gave their lives to save the plane from reaching its intended target. It is truly a touching and unforgettable experience. Next, a hearty lunch is included at Coal Miner's Café. Following lunch, you depart for a self-guided visit at the Quecreek Mine Rescue site, where on July 28, 2002, nine miners were miraculously rescued from 240 feet beneath the earth in a farmer's field just outside of Somerset. See the events from the time the accident occurred, until the last miner was brought up. The rescue site has been developed into a beautiful garden. You will have the chance to see the actual rescue capsule, the broken drill bit, and many more artifacts from the Quecreek rescue and mining at the Educational Visitor Center. After your visit, you will depart Somerset for home, with make a meal stop, at your own expense, on the way. L
