Day 1

Following a meal stop en route to Elkins, WV, we will pick up our local guide and take a driving tour of the city founded by Senators Davis & Elkins. Henry Gassaway Davis & Stephen Benton Elkins developed railroad lines, coal mines and timbering in the Tygart River Valley. Both men settled in Elkins and built their permanent residences known as Halliehurst and Graceland respectively and are located on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Mid-afternoon following our tour, we will check into the Hampton Inn Elkins (844-216-0259). The hotel features a fitness facility and indoor pool; and each room features a microwave, mini refrigerator and free high speed internet. After a brief time to freshen up, we will depart for dinner and a self-guided tour of the Graceland Mansion. Graceland, constructed of sandstone and hardwoods native to the region and built in Queen Anne architectural style, welcomed the elite of the area and the nation to many elaborate social occasions, political caucuses and business gatherings. Your evening concludes with a performance at the Gandy Dancer Theatre in Elkins. Enjoy a “Branson Style”, family-friendly variety show complete with music and comedy guaranteed to keep your toes tapping and hands clapping. Return to your hotel to relax and unwind for the remainder of the evening.

Day 2

Following a deluxe continental breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the newly restored train depot in Elkins to board the Cheat Mountain Salamander for a leisurely ride through the picturesque mountainside with a stop at the inspirational High Falls of the Cheat, where you will enjoy lunch included aboard the train. The train will continue on its journey through wilderness unspoiled by our modern world. After the train ride, we will stop at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, home to the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable dish in the world to get introduced to the fascination world of radio astronomy. After our tour, we will board our motorcoach and travel a short distance to Durbin to experience the sights and sounds of the Durbin Rocket, one of the rarest steam locomotives in existence. Ride in an authentic 1920’s Caboose behind Old #3, one of only three operating Climax geared logging locomotives on earth. Mother Nature welcomes you to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of autumn’s vibrantly painted countryside. Next, we return to the hotel to freshen up and then make our way to the Railyard Restaurant, where dinner is included this evening. Dine as you watch the trains come and go from the depot. After dinner, we return to the hotel where the remainder of the evening is yours to enjoy the hotel amenities.

Day 3

After a deluxe continental breakfast, you will check out and depart for Cass, WV, to take a ride on the Cass Railroad. Please dress warm, as the train does have an open air car and can get chilly. Prepare to take a step back in time and relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Unparalleled views and the sounds of the whistles and rails transport you back in time for a serene ride along the rails. A boxed lunch will be included prior to your ride.
