DAY 1

Hop aboard as we travel to Maryland's Eastern Shore, located between the Chesapeake and the Atlantic Ocean, to discover the labor of love put forth by hard-working, cage lugging, early-rising, fun-loving men and women who love what they do. Our first stop will be at Madhouse Oysters for a presentation about one of Dorchester County's newest industries, Oyster Aquaculture. Located on Hoopers Island, Madhouse Oysters is an aquaculture facility that farm-raise oysters from larvae the size of a grain seed to full-sized edible oysters. The farmed oyster is sustainability in action as it does not require outside food input, cleans the water in which it lives and is fundamentally responsible for an explosion of diversity of aquatic life in areas where oyster farms exist. Learn about the growth of the oysters from grain-size to full-size and the equipment they use to process them. Madhouse has this down to a science and their product is full of distinct flavor from the salt of the ocean with a hint of sweetness only the Chesapeake can offer. Next, we are off to Old Salty's Restaurant for a buffet-style meal featuring crab cakes (one per person), clam strips, fresh fish, soft-shell crabs, baked chicken, ham, vegetables, salad and rolls. After lunch, we will depart for the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland. Upon arrival you will have time to browse the gift shop and stroll through the Visitor Center. Afterwards, we will board our motorcoach for a Wildlife Drive watching for bald eagles, various waterfowl, sika and white-tailed deer, Delmarva Fox Squirrel and other species. The refuge is home to an incredible amount of plant and animal diversity in three major habitats - forest, marsh and shallow water. Your guide will provide information about the wildlife that call the refuge home as well as point out any of its inhabitants along the way. Our final stop of the day will be at Emily's Produce to take a little taste of the Eastern Shore back home with you. Seven generations and still going strong, Emily's offers its visitors farm fresh produce picked and ready to be served at your table. Browse their fruit, vegetables, jams and jellies, U-pick patch, baked goods, as well as plants and flowers. If you have room from lunch, you may want to finish the day with a fabulous hand-dipped ice cream before boarding the bus to return home. Feel free to bring a cooler to store under the motorcoach if you think that you may want to bring some Eastern Shore produce home. We will return home with a short stop along the way.
