Some live on land, some live in the sea, come along with us and you will agree that the home of the brave and that of the free is inhabited not only by the likes of you and me. Hop aboard and travel with us to discover the numerous species that roam the lands of the Philadelphia Zoo and that call the water their home at the Adventure Aquarium Camden. Our first stop at approximately 10:30 a.m. is the Philadelphia Zoo. You will have approximately 3 hours to explore the 42-acre property that is home to more than 1,300 animals, many of them rare and endangered. Like many other historical sites in the "City of Brotherly Love", the Philadelphia Zoo dates back to the mid 1800's, but America's first zoo did not open until 15 years after its charter was established due to the civil war. Today, your visit to the zoo is self-guided to allow you to explore the many regions of the park at your leisure. One of the Zoo's most unique features is Zoo360, which is a property-wide network of see-through mesh trails that provides more opportunities for animals to roam around and above Zoo grounds. Not only can you stroll through Gorilla Treeway, Great Ape Trail and Big Cat Crossing, but you can also visit the Reptile and Amphibian House, Bird Valley, Monkey Junction and more. By connecting people with the wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats. If you get hungry during your visit or want to take home a memory of your visit, the Zoo has a wide range of various food potions throughout the zoo and a wonderful gift shop. Next, we are off to the Adventure Aquarium Camden which is just a short drive over the Delaware River into New Jersey. We will have approximately 2 hours to explore the Adventure Aquarium. It is home to 8,500 aquatic species throughout two million gallons of water. It features the largest collection of sharks on the East Coast, as well as a unique suspension bridge that hangs just inches over Shark Realm. In addition, the Aquarium is the only one in the world to exhibit hippos and one of only six in the U.S. to have Little Blue penguins as permanent residents. Do you know what a shark feels like? Well, here at Adventure Aquarium you can find out in the Touch a Shark Exhibit or touch slick, slimy and all-around cool underwater creatures in the touch pool. During your self-guided tour of the Aquarium, visit the different themed zones and talk with staff members about the aquatic creatures that call this home. If you find yourself needing a snack or a memento to remember your visit, the Aquarium has you covered with a cafeteria and fully-stocked gift shop for your convenience. At the conclusion of our visit, we will depart for home at 4 p.m. with a dinner stop at your own expense along the way.
