After meal and rest stops en route, we will arrive in Wheeling, West Virginia and check in at the glorious Oglebay Resort (877-436-1797) for a one-night stay in Wilson Lodge. The Lodge offers an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, fitness center, business center with wireless internet, casual and fine dining restaurants, a game room and a full-service spa. In-room amenities include a Keurig coffee maker, LCD television and high speed internet. Next, we will stop at Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum located within a fully restored Victorian school building in Wheeling. The Museum houses an ever-changing collection of model trains and layouts, as well as antique dolls, action figures and specialty collectibles from days gone by. Kruger also has an impressive assortment of toys and artifacts from the world-famous Marx Toy Company that was once the largest toy manufacturer in the world with over one-third of all toys in the U.S. being Marx toys in the 1950's. Following our visit, we will return to Oglebay Resort for dinner included at Wilson Lodge. Now that night has fallen, it is time to visit Oglebay's Good Zoo to delight in the holiday lights display including an exciting animated music and light show that takes place nightly on the zoo patio with more than 35,000 LED lights choreographed to exciting holiday music. View the state's largest O-Gauge Model Train Exhibit with a special snow-covered section only featured during the holiday season. The Benedum Planetarium, also located at the Good Zoo, features a Laser Light Show with colorful laser images choreographed to your favorite holiday music. We conclude the evening with an event listed as one of the 10 Best Christmas Light Displays in the US according to AOL Travel, the Winter Festival of Lights at Oglebay Park. Welcoming visitors since 1985, this annual event covers more than 300 acres over a six mile drive making it one of the nation's largest. Eighty larger-than-life displays are now a part of this glowing show with new displays added each year. A favorite for festival goers is the 300 foot long Rainbow Tunnel including 30 arches of multi-colored lights spanning the road leading down to Schenk Lake. The festivals tallest spectacle stands nearly 60 feet tall and spans 50 feet in diameter, "The Poinsettia Wreath and Candle". At the conclusion of our driving tour, we will return to the Lodge for the remainder of the evening.
Breakfast will be included before we check out and make our way to browse the small collection of specialty shops of Oglebay including the Farmhouse Sweets & Treats, Carriage House Glass and the Palm Room. Next, enjoy a stroll through the elegant and educational 1846 Mansion Museum. Once the estate of Earl W. Oglebay, he purchased the mansion and surrounding acres to use as a summer home. The mansion features a dozen period rooms focusing on Wheeling's earliest settlement through the opulent Edwardian era and contains an impressive collection of American furniture, china, silver, glass pewter, toys and textiles. Our last stop before we depart the resort is at the Oglebay Institute Glass Museum. Located in the lower level of Carriage House Glass, the museum features more than 3,000 examples of Wheeling glass made from 1829-1939. One of the highlights of the museum is the largest piece of cut lead crystal ever made, The Sweeney Punch Bowl. Standing five-feet tall and weighing 225 pounds, this crystal treasure is world famous - a remarkable piece of Victorian artistry. At the conclusion of our visit, we will depart for the Wheeling Centre Market for lunch on your own and time to browse the shops. Our last stop of our trip will be at Cabela's sportsmen's paradise. You will have the chance to explore 175,000 square feet of camping, hunting and fishing gear and apparel, deer museum, laser shooting gallery and a 55,000-gallon aquarium filled with trophy fish.B
