Day 1

Our day begins at the majestic Hillwood Estate which was the former residence of art collector, businesswoman, socialite and philanthropist Marjorie Merriweather Post, the heir to the Post cereal fortune. Upon arrival at Hillwood, we will have lunch included in C.W. Post Courtyard. Marjorie Post purchased Hillwood in 1955 with the intent to leave it as a museum that would inspire and educate the public. Sparing no expense, Post assembled a superb collection of Russian art including paintings, furniture, Faberge eggs, and jewelry, as well as an equally impressive collection of 18th-century French decorative arts including furnishings, tapestries and porcelain. The 25 acres of gardens feature a circular rose garden, a formal French parterre, a large crescent-shaped lunar lawn, a traditional Japanese-style garden and waterfall, and a greenhouse for orchids. Marjorie was a long-time proponent of living a healthy life and emphasized exercise and healthy eating, as a matter of fact in the evenings she was known to bring golf balls out to her putting green for friendly competition. We will enjoy a guided mansion tour, with time afterwards to stroll through the gardens at our leisure. Next, we will visit the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul otherwise known as the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Its beginnings date back to 1893, but the foundation stone was not laid until 1907 in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt. Some 83 years later the Cathedral was completed in 1990 in the presence of President George H.W. Bush. Built of Indiana limestone and shaped like a cross, it is the sixth largest in the world. The Cathedral welcomes worshipers of all faiths and visitors who come to find peace and inspiration and experience the Cathedral’s extraordinary art and architecture. We will take a guided highlights tour with a short time afterwards to explore on our own or perhaps visit the Cathedral Store. Our final stop of the day will be for a self-guided tour at the United States Botanic Gardens committed to creating and offering extraordinary exhibits that delight, educate and inspire the public to become more active stewards of the plants that support life on earth. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1820, the Botanic Garden is one of the oldest in North America and offers a splendid variety of form, color, fruit and fragrance. At this time of year the Conservatory boasts a tropical paradise with one of the largest decorated trees in Washington, D.C. and a showcase of Poinsettias. At the conclusion of our visit we will depart for home with a meal stop at your expense en route.
