Day 1

Following meal and rest stops, you will arrive in Ogunquit, ME - which means "beautiful place by the sea". Upon arrival, you will check in at the Meadowmere Resort (1-207-646-9661), where you will be greeted with a wine and cheese welcome reception. Meadowmere offers contemporary elegance blended with old-fashioned Maine hospitality. The room amenities include complimentary wireless internet, refrigerator, hair dryer, and cable television. The hotel offers an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, and movie theatre. (The hotel does not have an elevator.) Next, you can wear your souvenir Maine lobster hat for an authentic lobsterbake dinner with sing-along entertainment. You will feast on sweet Maine lobster with all of the fixins (alternative choices of Chicken or Polenta with Roasted Vegetable & Marinara Sauce are available for the landlubbers). If you have not already made a choice contact our office to do so at least one month prior to the trip's departure. After dinner and entertainment, the remainder of the evening is yours to relax and enjoy the hotel amenities or take a short walk to Ogunquit Beach for a leisurely stroll.

Day 2

Our day begins with a deluxe continental breakfast included at the hotel, followed by a narrated driving tour of Portland. Our local guide will lead us around Maine's largest "city by the sea". See Portland's historic waterfront district and drive by the boyhood home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the Victoria Mansion and sea captains' mansions. Learn about Portland's famous citizens and its maritime history as you pass by the working waterfront and the islands dotting Casco Bay. Grab your cameras as we make a stop at nearby Portland Head Light for a photo opportunity of this classic Maine lighthouse situated in Fort Williams Park. Your travels continue to Freeport, home of the L.L. Bean flagship store and a myriad of outlet shops and restaurants. Lunch will be on your own with some free time to browse the stores. Afterwards, you travel to the picturesque mountain village of Bethel. Nestled at the base of Paradise Hill, Bethel is truly "just this side of Paradise." Most rural villages are a one-industry village, but Bethel is a rare blend of farming, forestry, wood products manufacturing, education, and tourism. While in Bethel, you will have a guided tour of Maine Balsam Fir Products specializing in balsam pillows. Using completely natural products, the balsam used is collected on small family farms as a secondary product from their tree-cutting businesses. Enjoy the natural and healthy fragrance of balsam as you see the start-to-finish process behind their hand-made items. Following the tour, you will arrive to a welcome reception and check into the Jordan Grand Summit Hotel (207-824-5000) for a two-night stay. The Jordan Grand's Summit Hotel combines the best of both worlds, offering all the amenities you would expect from a full-service hotel. The hotel features an outdoor heated pool with hot tub, fitness & health center with sauna, spa treatments, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the building, gift shop, and game room. Dinner is included this evening at the hotel.

Day 3

After a full breakfast included at the hotel, discover the history of this unique area with a visit to the Bethel Historical Society Museum. You will have a guided tour of one of the beautiful homes built in the early 1800's as well as a 30 minute presentation capturing the essence of Bethel's history. Next, roll up your sleeves, grab your apron and bucket, and prepare for a hands-on gemstone sluicing program. Learn about the gemstones that are native to the area including Maine Tourmaline, and you get to keep your treasures. Lunch will be on your own in Bethel Village with some time to browse the antique shops and art galleries. You will return to the hotel where your local guide will take you on a special two-hour moose-watching tour in Grafton Notch State Park. Learn about these gentle giants as you quietly wait for them to immerge from the wilderness. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel to freshen up for dinner included this evening at a classic New England Inn.

Day 4

A full breakfast will be included at the hotel before you check out and depart for a scenic drive through the White Mountains and a tree-lined corridor all ablaze with warm autumn colors. Next, you will have free time for lunch on your own in the quaint mountain village of North Conway, where you'll find the village green surrounded by boutiques, shops and casual restaurants. This afternoon, you will travel New England's most scenic byway, the Kancamagus Highway, en route to Franconia Notch State Park. Upon arrival, you will board an enclosed tram to the summit of Cannon Mountain where the panoramic view of distant valleys and mountains is awe-inspiring. Tonight, you will relive the romance of dining on the rails aboard the Café Lafayette Dinner Train. This beautifully restored vintage Pullman railroad car will take you on a leisurely two hour ride meandering through the lush forests and magnificent mountain vistas accompanied by an elegant five course feast. Following your ride, you will travel south to the New Hampshire Lake Region to check into the Hampton Inn, Tilton (1-603-286-3400) for your final night's stay.
