The state's most well-known industries are the thoroughbred horse racing/farms and bourbon distilleries. The horse farm tour will offer you a close encounter with horses. As part of your morning of horses, you will visit the Kentucky Horse Park, where you will find the International Museum of the Horse, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute. It is here at the Horse Park that you will also have time to purchase lunch on your own. Start your day with breakfast served at the hotel. Depart after breakfast for Bardstown, KY, which was first settled by European Americans in 1780; it is the second oldest city in Kentucky. Bardstown is the site of "My Old Kentucky Home" State Park and several distilleries operating in and around the Bardstown area, including Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, Barton 1792 and Maker's Mark, thus the title "Bourbon Capital of the World." Your first stop today is for a local tour of Bardstown complete with whiskey history. You will have some free time in downtown Bardstown to purchase lunch on your own. After lunch, your next tour is at Maker's Mark Distillery where you will learn the history of this historic brand and see the process of production from start to finish. Next is a tour of your last distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail - Heaven Hill Distilleries, founded by several investors shortly after the repeal of Prohibition in 1935, which included prominent distiller Joseph L. Beam and a member of the Shapira family; it is the five brothers of the Shapira family that bought out the other investors and members of the family and operate Heaven Hill today. For over a half-century, Heaven Hill Brand's sixth-generation Master Distiller, Parker Beam, has been practicing his family craft for distilling, aging and selecting some of the world's most critically acclaimed bourbon. Parker's grandfather and namesake was the brother of James "Jim" Beam. Tour this facility and the Bourbon Heritage Center of this Bardstown distiller. Dinner will be on your own this eveing prior to you being a guest at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival at the Kentucky Bourbon All-Star Sampler. The evening features all the KDA Master Distillers under one roof. Sample the iconic Bourbons while you enjoy genuine Kentucky cuisine and music. Just remember the word "sample" as you must be able to walk to and board the coach under your own power for return to the hotel and overnight.
