DAY 1

Depart Pennsylvania this morning and travel to neighboring West Virginia with your first tour stop being the Canyon Rim Visitors Center for your first view of the New River Gorge and New River Gorge Bridge. The New River Gorge is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia, and the National Park encompasses over 72,808 acres of land along 53 miles of the New River. The Gorge Bridge is a steel arch bridge 3,030 feet long with a height of 876 feet over the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, WV. For many years the bridge was the world's longest single-span arch bridge in the world; it is now the third longest. Following the visit to the New River Gorge, you will check into the Country Inn & Suites in Beckley, WV (304-252-5100). The hotel features an indoor/outdoor pool, fitness center and free Wi-Fi throughout the Inn. All rooms feature cable TV with HBO, Pay-Per-View movies, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron/ironing board, and radio/alarm clock. This evening, dinner will be arranged for the group at an area restaurant. After dinner, return to the hotel to rest, relax, and perhaps enjoy a swim before settling in for the night.

DAY 2

Enjoy a delicious complimentary hot breakfast at the hotel this morning prior to departure and touring. Your first stop today is at Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine; here you will get a realistic look at coal mining as it was at the turn of the century. Travel 1,500 feet underground in authentic mining cars with veteran miners as guides. You will have time to explore the historic recreated coal camp as well. After your morning tour, the coach will transport you to Lewisburg, WV, recognized as a Top Southern Mountain Town in America and most recently voted "America's Coolest Small Town" by Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine. Lunch is arranged for you today at a favorite local restaurant. After lunch, you will be shuttled to the Greenbrier Resort, a luxury resort near White Sulphur Springs, WV. Your visit will include a tour of the legendary Greenbrier bunker built underneath the 5-star resort. The bunker was formerly the top-secret Government Relocation Facility meant to serve as an emergency shelter for the United States Congress during the Cold War period. The resort itself was built in 1913 by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and was owned for much of its history by that company and its successors, including CSX Corporation. It is now privately owned and purchased in 2009 by local entrepreneur Jim Justice. A total of 26 Presidents have stayed at The Greenbrier. Late afternoon, depart the Greenbrier for Tamarack Artisan Center, located in the majestic mountains of West Virginia. You will enjoy a delectable dinner (voucher provided to purchase dinner from the cafeteria) - the food is prepared by Greenbrier-trained chefs! Free time will be given to shop the mountain arts and crafts at this nationally known center. You will find various juried crafts and artworks from all 55 West Virginia counties. Following dinner and shopping, immerse yourself in Appalachia with storyteller Granny Sue. Ranging from tall tales to family stories, ghostly tales to Appalachian ballads, Granny Sue's stories and songs share the history and culture of the mountains. Susanna "Granny Sue" Holstein is an award-winning West Virginia storyteller, writer and poet. Her audiences are carried back to a simpler time, when the front porch was the place to gather, swap tales, sing, laugh and listen. Later this evening return to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 3

Once again, enjoy breakfast at the hotel prior to check-out. Board the coach for transfer to the aerial scenic tram to the bottom of the New River Gorge Canyon. Here you will climb aboard "Miss M. Rocks," a 21-foot covered Jetboat, where a combination of speed and power will conquer the currents of the New River at Hawk's Nest State Park. On this ride you will see the bridge from a different perspective as you travel under it. Following this morning's tour, board the coach and begin your return trip to Pennsylvania with great memories and photos of wild and wonderful West Virginia. Rest and meal stops will be made on the trip home as needed.
