Day 1

Today, we travel to Triangle, VA to visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps in celebration of its official birthday which was November 10, 1775. That was the day when the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines. Upon arrival at the Museum, we will have a self-guided tour which will allow for time to learn about the Marine Corps by walking through the various individual galleries that depict specific eras and highlight Marine Contributions to significant events in American History. Era exhibit galleries will take you onto the beach at Iwo Jima, through a frigid winter night on watch against possible attack in Korea, and into a hot "LZ" (landing zone) in Vietnam. Combining priceless artifacts, such as the flag raised on top of Iwo Jima, with documentary films, and recordings of Marines telling their own stories, the galleries bring the wartime experiences to life. The United States Marine Corps birthday is celebrated every year with a cake cutting ceremony which is scheduled to take place at 12 noon. Lunch today is on your own while at the Museum. Next, we will visit the Quantico National Cemetery to pay our respects to America's fallen servicemen and women and learn more about the Missing in America Project. Within the 725 rolling, wooded acres of the cemetery includes the burial sites of those known and unknown who gave their lives defending our freedom. The Missing in America Project was initiated to locate, identify and secure a final resting place for the unclaimed cremated remains of American veterans. It is in Section 22 of Quantico National Cemetery that we will honor and pay our respect to these forgotten heroes by placing American flags on their graves. Dinner this evening will be included before we return home.
