Day 1

Following meal and rest stops en route, we will begin our holiday tour with a visit to one of the most unusually complete examples of a Gilded Age estate that will be lavishly adorned with Victorian Christmas d├ęcor for the holidays, Maymont. Located in Richmond, Maymont was the most elaborate of several elite homes that reflected high style of the day and the taste of well-educated, cosmopolitan millionaires. By 1893, some seven years after construction began, the Dooleys were living in their new 33-room home that had the latest modern conveniences of the era including electric lighting, an elevator, three full bathrooms and central heat. When you enter the upper floors, you step into the luxurious world of James and Sallie May Dooley, the only owners of the estate before being bequeathed to the City of Richmond and opened to the public within six months of Sallie May's passing. May the warmth of the season fill your heart with a visit to this exquisite mansion. Next, we will check in to the Hampton Inn & Suites Richmond/Glenside (804-756-1777) for the night. The hotel features an outdoor pool (seasonal), fitness room, business center and on-site convenience store. Guest room amenities include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and ironing board and complimentary high speed internet access. After a brief time to freshen up, we will depart for the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens for the Gardenfest of Lights, a holiday tradition featuring more than half-a-million twinkling lights, hand-crafted botanical decorations, model trains and more that you can experience during your self-guided walk through the property. Dinner will be included while at the Gardens along with an appearance by strolling carolers while we dine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so be prepared for an experience like no other as we take a Tacky Lights Tour. The region is nationally known for its Tacky Lights Tours throughout many neighborhoods with each house decorated with a minimum of 10,000 lights. Witness light displays from the over-the-top crazy to the majestic. At the conclusion of our driving tour, we will return to the hotel to retire for the evening.

Day 2

A hot breakfast will be included at the hotel before we check out and depart for a tour of the Virginia State Capitol building. Thomas Jefferson designed his neo-classic marvel featuring a hidden dome, pre-historic fossils in the marble floor and the world famous Houdon statue of George Washington. Witness the enhanced beauty of the Capitol building during the holidays as the Commonwealth goes all out to decorate this stately structure. A special treat during our visit to Capitol Square is a look inside the Executive Mansion, a Federal-era mansion which has been the official residence of Virginia governors and their families since its completion in 1813 making it the oldest governor's mansion in the nation still being used for its original purpose. The Executive Mansion will also be beautifully decorated for the holidays. After our walking tours, we will have time for lunch on our own in Historic Shockoe Slip. The Slip is alive with eclectic restaurants from Victorian elegance to legendary brewpubs, fresh seafood and hand-made pasta. Following lunch we will depart for home.
