Day 1

Following a breakfast stop en route, we will arrive in Cape May, NJ, at the Marquis de Lafayette. Check in is after 3:00 p.m., so you will be able to enjoy free time for lunch on your own at the Washington Street Mall, which is just a block from the hotel. Located in the heart of Cape May's Historic District, the Mall features a variety of sidewalk cafes, as well as quaint boutiques and galleries that line its lovely brick walkways. You may wish to soak up some sun on the beach, which is located just across the street from the Marquis. After 3:00 p.m., you can return to the Marquis de Lafayette (609-884-3500) for a one-night stay. The hotel is conveniently located across the street from the beach and features a pool, on-site restaurant and pub, and rocking chairs for a relaxing view of the ocean. Guest rooms include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and ironing board. An early dinner will be included at the Lobster House on Fisherman's Wharf. Relax and enjoy a beautiful view of the Cape May Harbor as you are served a fresh and savory seafood entrée; and for the landlubbers, there will also be an equally delightful entrée available. Next, board the Cape May Spirit for a leisurely cruise around Cape May Point and up the coastline of Cape May. Throughout the cruise, the captain will offer an overview of the lore, legend and ecology of the waterway. In addition, you may observe dolphins, birds and other marine mammals native to the local waters. Be sure to have your camera ready to catch the view at sunset of the stately Cape May Lighthouse. Upon returning to the dock, we will return to the hotel to relax and unwind for the evening.

Day 2

A hearty breakfast buffet will be included at the hotel with a morning of leisure. You may wish to take a morning stroll on the beach or walk through the magnificent Historic District and view the glorious Victorian homes that make this destination a seaside gem. If you are interested in a trolley tour, you may purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, where most tours start or call 609-884-5404 for more information. You may want to consider a bite to eat before your late morning check out, as we will depart the hotel for a brief stop at Cape May Point State Park and Cape May Lighthouse. Located at the tip of New Jersey, the park encompasses 190 acres of an ever-changing shoreline region of dunes, coastal (freshwater) marshes and ponds, wooded islands and varied uplands. Although there will not be a lot of time to stroll the entire area, as time permits, you may wish to climb the steps of the Cape May Lighthouse (admission fee not included). A 157 foot tall structure with 217 steps, the Lighthouse is still commissioned as an aid to navigation. The oil shed adjacent to the Lighthouse has been converted into a small welcome center and gift shop. Our final stop will be at Sunset Beach in search of the famed "Cape May Diamonds". A natural stone of pure quartz crystal appears as a white frosted pebble when found dry but will brighten and become clear when dampened. The stones are of diverse colors and shades and vary in size from little peas to the size of a walnut. While hunting your "diamonds", notice the concrete ship, the Atlantus, located just offshore. Part of a fleet of concrete ships that the U.S. Government commissioned during WWI, it was tossed onto the shoals surrounding Sunset Beach when the tides turned following a storm. The time has come to return home, and we will make a dinner stop along the way.
