We depart this morning with meal and rest stops en route to coastal New England. Our first stop is the Essex Steam Train. We will board the Essex Steam Train for a 12-mile narrated trip into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley, designated "one of the last great places on earth" by the Nature Conservancy. The steam locomotive pulls vintage coaches a leisurely 20 mph through the picturesque countryside that features pristine meadows, a millpond with waterfall and trestles and bridges over rivers and creeks. After our train ride, we will travel to Middletown, Rhode Island to check in to the Newport Beach Hotel & Suites (401-846-0310) for the next three nights. The hotel amenities include an indoor heated pool with hot tub, a new fitness center, a business center with complimentary Wi-Fi, and guest laundry facility. Guest rooms feature a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, HD TV with DVD player and complimentary use of the in-house DVD library, hair dryer and iron/ironing board. Dinner this evening will be included with the remainder of the evening to relax and unwind.D
Wake up to breakfast included at the hotel. Afterwards, we begin our day with our local guide Mrs. Caroline Astor, the Grande Dame of Newport and New York Society in the gilded Age of the late 1800's. Mrs. Astor will lead us on a narrated driving tour highlighting Newport's charming historic buildings and restored homes. Take in the rugged beauty of Ten-Mile Ocean Drive and the fabulous mansions along the tree-lined Bellevue Avenue. Next, admission will be included on a self-guided tour of the Elms Mansion. Once the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind, the mansion was modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres outside of Paris and was built primarily for entertaining and as a showcase for art and included every modern convenience available at the turn of the 20th century. At the conclusion of our visit, we will have time for lunch on our own and some time to browse the antique stores, art galleries and specialty shops on the historic downtown waterfront. This afternoon, we will have a fascinating harbor cruise featuring Newport's picture-perfect best, offering up close views of a lighthouse, grand estates and more. Following the cruise, we are cordially invited to Royal Tea at the Historic Hotel Viking. As a member of the prestigious Historic Hotels of America, the hotel holds a special place in history, from the clock depicting the ancient Nordic Runes to the original 1926 brass letter box. Our host will introduce us to proper tea etiquette as we enjoy expertly brewed teas, house-made scones and tea sandwiches. Dinner this evening will be on your own and the local guide will offer us with a few suggested Newport favorites.B
Our day begins once again with breakfast included at the hotel before we depart our hotel en route to Providence. Upon arrival, we will meet our local guide at Scialo Brothers Bakery. Located in the heart of Federal Hill, the bakery started as a family business in 1916 and is still operated by Luigi's daughters. Observe cake decorating and the art of pastry making, as well as indulge in scrumptious and unique samplings. Next, we will board our motorcoach for a narrated city tour of Providence. Tour highlights feature Roger Williams National Memorial Park to learn about Providences' founder, a drive along Benefit Street's "Mile of History" with its impressive collection of colonial homes, views of the prestigious Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. Finally, we will visit the Rhode Island State House, home of the fourth largest self-supporting dome in the world. Lunch will be on your own in Federal Hill before we make our way back to Newport. Upon return to Newport, we will stop at Newport Vineyards for a tasting of select wines and a tour of the outdoor vineyard (weather permitting) and the winery to learn about their wine making process. Take home a souvenir glass and perhaps purchase some wine to enjoy when back at the hotel or at home. Dinner will be included this evening followed by a re-creation of a Newport Cotillion.B, D
Our final morning begins with breakfast included at the hotel before we check out and make our way to Mystic Seaport - The Museum of America and The Sea. Explore American maritime history first-hand as we can climb aboard tall ships, stroll through a re-created 19th century coastal village or watch a working preservation shipyard in action. Be sure to visit the Maritime Gallery before venturing through Olde Mystic Village with its brick pathways making way to its various shops and restaurants where you have time for lunch on our own. We then depart for home with meal and rest stops en route.B
