DAY 1

On this tour we leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind us as we cross over the Potomac River into Virginia and some of the most picturesque landscape along the corridor to Leesburg. Nestled in the arms of a wooded ridge is Morven Park Mansion, once the home of Governor Westmoreland Davis and his wife Marguerite. In its 240-year history, the mansion has transformed from a modest fieldstone house into the impressive Greek Revival building of today with formal boxwood gardens and its pastures are dotted by creatively designed equestrian cross-country jumps. We will have a guided tour of the 1st & 2nd floor of the home lavishly furnished with eclectic and opulent antiques from her world-wide travels. Look closely at the 16th-century Belgian tapestries, hundreds of silver pieces, Hudson River Valley paintings and Asian treasures which remain on display throughout the mansion. Learn about the Davis' social and civic lives as well as the stories of the employees responsible for daily work necessary to keep the estate running. We will also explore the Museum of Hounds and Hunting of North America located within the mansion which honors the Morven Park's equestrian heritage, and the Davis' love of foxhunting. The museum preserves the art, artifacts and memorabilia of foxhunting's rich history. Finally, we will walk through the Winmill Carriage Museum featuring a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles donated by carriage driving enthusiast, Viola Winmill. The 40 antique coaches, carriages, sleds and carts range from Utilitarian to regal. Witness the miniature road coach designed for General Tom Thumb of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, as well as the elegant caleche loaned for the use of Grace Kelly in the movie "The Swan". Next, we will board the motorcoach and travel to charming downtown Leesburg for a short time to stroll the streets, browse the quaint shops and grab a light bite to eat. Afterwards, we will depart for Oatlands Historic House and Gardens in Leesburg. A stately mansion, beautiful rolling farmland, exquisite gardens and over 200 years of American history and culture can be found at Oatlands built by one of Virginia's first families, George Carter. Built in 1804, Oatlands was a thriving plantation until the Civil War. In the 20th-century, Oatlands became the country estate of the politically prominent Eustis family of Washington and is honored as a National Trust Historic Site and National Historic Landmark. We are invited to enjoy High Tea in the Carriage House at Oatlands much like the Eustis family would have in the past. Black Tea with Calendula, exclusively for Oatlands will be served with traditional tea sandwiches, scones with accompaniments and delightful desserts. At the conclusion of our tea time, we will board the motorcoach for our return trip home. A short stop will be made along the way.
